Salem was formed in Gainesville, FL, August 2002 by former members of the post-hardcore band As Friends Rust. Shortly after forming, the band had managed to tour worldwide as well as appear on the Warped Tour before signing in 2003 to Fiddler Records (which had by then become an imprint of Geffen/Universal Records' distributing). The band soon released their debut EP Love It or Leave Me. The album was well received and the band toured extensively. By December 2004 relations within the band were stressed, and vocalist Adam D'Zurilla was asked to leave the band and now currently works in the food and drink industry in Southern California.

By April 2005, the band had written over eleven new songs and were eager to share them with fans online. After line up and changes in musical direction, Salem disbanded in August, 2005. The members then went on to create Currents and Mother/Father (along with members of former Epitaph recording artists Scatter the Ashes).
